Overview

WWL, New Orleans legendary News-Talk-Sports super brand, is looking for a Sports Director.  We’re looking for a multi-dimensional player, who is an exceptional planner, talker & listener - with a passion for sports, listener/fan engagement and a deep love for New Orleans & our incredible Southeast Louisiana sports teams. You will be responsible for co-hosting or hosting SportsTalk with Saints legend Bobby Hebert, college and football analyst Mike Detillier and other hosts as needed, strategizing coverage, creating and delivering compelling content on-air, online & on social media, and collaborating with the sports and management teams to elevate the brand and deliver results. Should also love reporting; have significant digital & social media skills; a strong understanding of the programming/sales connection, and stout communication, organization, writing & producing skills. Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities and location of the applicant, as well as internal and external equity.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:

  • Co-hosting SportsTalk with Saints legend Bobby Hebert, college, pro football analyst Mike Detillier and other hosts as needed 
  • Lead sports content team and direct and supervise their work 
  • Work with Brand Manager to recruit, select, hire, orient, and train sports content team members 
  • Set goals and deadlines, organize work flows and schedules, and assign work to members of the sports team
  • Work with Brand Manager to Implement productivity standards, monitor team productivity, and evaluate team performance 
  • Work with Brand Manager to provide constructive feedback and coaching, counseling
  • Take lead on developing and executing a sports content strategy that grows a large loyal audience
  • Act as a liaison between the sports team and other departments re: multi-platform content generation
  • Develop sports story ideas, features and special projects for broadcast & digital coverage
  • Oversee daily sports coverage, assign, review, and edit articles, and work with Brand Manager, News Director & Digital Content Manager to align digital and broadcast coverage strategies
  • Collaborate on podcasts and other specialty multimedia content
  • Use real-time metrics to drive editorial/story decisions
  • Develop and maintain sports calendar and schedule 
  • Work with Brand Manager & Digital Content Manager to develop clear goals and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) around scale, engagement and TLH that hold team accountable for progress

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • 5+ years of experience covering sports and producing, editing, and distributing sports news and digital audio content
  • Outstanding sports judgment and familiarity with the New Orleans market 
  • Extreme patience, interpersonal skills, and a tolerance for a high-pressure environment
  • Strong editing, writing, reporting and show/story development skills 
  • A knack for transforming a piece of audio into a compelling digital article 
  • Ability to refine and optimize podcasts and audio content for digital distribution
  • Command of best practices on all social media platforms
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
